Rub a dub dub your jewelry (probably) needs a scrub!

We've all been there: you acquire a piece of jewelry as a gift, an inheritance, an engagement ring, you name it, and you just never want to take it off! Fast forward a few years, it's been practically glued to you, and you hardly even think about it. While we all love our jewelry, many of us unknowingly mistreat it. There are a few basic things we can all do to increase the lifespan of our fine jewelry.

Please enjoy these tips on how to show your most treasured jewelry the love it needs!

1) Keep it clean!
Clean your own fine jewelry on a monthly basis (if you are able).
Step 1: Mix a small amount of mild liquid dish soap into a small cup of warm water.
Step 2: Soak your fine jewelry for about half an hour. Brush with a tooth brush as needed.
Step 3: Rinse with water.
Always read the label of the soap or cleaning solution you are using prior to cleaning your own jewelry. Please note that certain delicate stones such as pearls, coral, jade, and opals should not be soaked, but you can always gently wipe the stone with a clean, soft rag, and scrub the metal with a toothbrush.
These tips do not apply to costume jewelry. When in doubt, give us a call!

2) Take it off!
Fine jewelry is absolutely meant to be worn and admired, but there is a time and place.
Everyday tasks like gardening, cooking, and cleaning trap dirt and debris inside of rings, bracelets, watches, etc, and run the risk of damage. If you prepare food with dirty jewelry on, the food will be contaminated. Wearing jewelry while playing sports or hitting the gym can do immense damage, not only to your jewelry, but also to your body. Earrings can be torn out, necklaces and bracelets can catch, rings can be crushed or pinched, the list goes on. Swimming, showering, and even sleeping can wear away at your jewelry.
Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the morning, and the first thing you take off, as needed. It's helpful to designate a specific place to safely store your jewelry while not in use.
Now you may be thinking, "So where can I wear my jewelry?"
Honestly, just about anywhere! On a date, out to lunch, running errands, at work (non-manual labor), relaxing, spending time with friends, going for a walk, the list goes on!
I hope this has helped you get a grasp of when it's best to take off your jewelry. Silicone rings are also a great option if you feel uncomfortable without your wedding, engagement, or promise ring while working out, doing manual labor, etc.
This all may seem intimidating at first, but it's just a matter of gradually building good habits over time.

3) Let us help!
On top of keeping up on your own, we recommend having your jewelry professionally cleaned and checked annually. We offer these services for free, while you wait.

4) Consider Insurance
Fine jewelry is an asset, and losing assets in events such as home invasions can be devastating. We have partnered with Jewelers Mutual Insurance as a part of their link program. This means we are able to directly upload or scan current appraisals for a free quote from Jeweler's Mutual, to help facilitate the protection of your assets. For insurance purposes, appraisals should be assessed for updates every 5-10 years. We offer updated appraisals for only $15, and new appraisals for $80. Discounts are available for those who wish to do multiple appraisals at once. All appraisals are done in-house by our very own G.I.A. Gemologist Josef Waldmann.

Weekend Roundup!

We've been busy little worker bees over here, and Joe's been cranking out custom creations left and right!
I thought it would be fun to showcase some items fresh off the bench, ready to wear out the store.

So without further ado..

We have a modern, industrial smokey quartz pendant in sterling silver. Eclectic, versatile, and elegant! We offer this pendant for $300, and are able to create similar pendants with all sorts of gemstones, if desired.

Joe also recently created a stunning men's wedding band.
This piece is comprised of PVD coated titanium aluminum nitrate, with a 2.5 carat white sapphire tension-set in the center. The process of tension-setting requires great precision, and all of our tension-set pieces are specifically engineered based on the band and stone in use. Lightweight yet sturdy, masculine yet elegant. Not to mention the white sapphire sparkles to no end! Pictures cannot do this ring justice... but I'm posting one anyway ;) This handsome ring is available for $1,500. We can make similar rings to order as well.

We also recently completed a "Princess Ring" for a client! Looking forward to hopefully making more of these down the road, for the royal at heart.

The client went with a two-tone for this particular piece- 14 karat rose gold on top and 14 karat yellow gold on bottom. Our crowned jewels in this instance are diamonds (.75 carat total weight). We are able to replicate this piece in your choice of gold for $3,000.
We also offer colored stones (prices may vary!)

Something Old => Something New

We always have such fun projects come through our door!
A gal recently came in with a darling vintage pin she wasn't getting any mileage out of.

We've soldered old pins onto gold bangle bracelets in the past (very cool!), so we suggested converting it into a bracelet. She opted for a more delicate look, so we gently bent the pin into more of a crescent shape and soldered chain onto either side for a beautiful, lightweight look.

Needless to say, the bracelet came out as cute as a button! Hopefully she gets a lot more use out of this little guy!

Got any old jewelry just laying around, collecting dust? Come see us!

Revitalized

There is something about restoration projects that I find incredibly satisfying. Taking something old and used, and bringing it back to life. It brings such fulfillment to preserve pieces of our history, especially when those pieces are something you can actually wear.

Joe likes to frequent local estate sales, and has had some amazing finds. This piece has got to take the cake, though! One morning, Joe was perusing a sale when he stumbled upon this platinum tennis bracelet, circa the roaring '20s! At the time, it was just a skeleton. No stones, a bit worn out, but the potential was clear.

A fabulous, visionary client of ours decided to embark on this restorative journey with us.

We gradually tracked down over 7.5 carats of diamonds to perfectly fit every setting in this bracelet, and had the metalwork restored as we set the stones. After countless hours of hard work, our client has finally been able to bring this labor of love home with her, wearing it out of the store. (Because diamonds go with everything!)

"The jade takes the hit for you"

My father once told me that it is good luck to break a piece of jade- he said to break a piece of jade is to avoid utter peril!
He told me if I hadn't broken that pendant I had just haplessly knocked onto the floor, that something terrible would have happened instead- that the jade takes the hit for you. I was not sure whether he came up with this on the spot to make me feel better, but it was a comfort nonetheless.

I'm beginning to believe that breaking jade can most definitely be a happy accident. (Not that I recommend throwing your jewelry around all willy nilly!)

A long time client and friend of ours recently came in with a chunk of jade which had been part of a ring belonging to her son. He wore the ring every day, until it fell and broke. There were tears.
Luckily, the chunk which remained was the perfect size to set into a new ring.

We completed this piece in time for Christmas, and hope that this ring brings good luck (and longevity) to its owner.

Mission Complete

For those of you who have been following our blog, we completed ring number 2 on budget and ahead of schedule!

Our client was able to pick up this gargantuan earlier this week.

She was thrilled to put her family's stones to better use. Her grandfather's diamond is the center piece, and we had her mother's diamonds re-cut and set on either side. The value of this gorgeous, 14 karat white gold ring is greater than she imagined!

We look forward to our future custom endeavors, and keeping all of you in the loop.

Until next time,
Your friends at Porter Jensen

Not all jewelry is created equal

It's Sunday funday over here at Porter Jensen, and we have a healthy dose of fabulousness to share!

We recently acquired some extremely cool, vintage Mexican silver. These creations are by Los Castillo from Taxco, Mexico.

Circa mid 1940's, this style has stood the test of time. Imitations of this necklace are still being made.

Heavily influenced by Aztec art, Los Castillo silver jewelry is known for unique designs paired with a particularly high level of workmanship.

Circa 1950, this set makes a bold statement.

Los Castillos are sought after by collectors, as they are wearable art. Most modern silver jewelry simply lacks this attention to detail.

These little pieces of history are fully fashion-functional- perfect for a night on the town, or maybe even this year's Dia De Los Muertos party!
